Lemon cake at Mitre, Earlham Rd, NorEats

Mitre, Earlham Rd

The top aim at Mitre is simple, so simple that they made a hashtag for it: to create #APublicHome. And when we visited on one sunny spring day, a home is exactly what it felt like, with comfy sofas, big slices of cake, and a range of nooks and corners to suit everyone.

A bit of a walk out of the city centre, but nestled in the Golden Triangle, Mitre is the kind of coffee shop you go to to while away a couple of hours rather than just pick up a quick caffeine fix. The interior is minimalist but warm – whether you like a sunny spot in an armchair, or need a table to work at, there’s a place for you, plenty of charging points, and a menu that that manages to span breakfast and lunch, hot and cold, and meat and non-meat options without being intimidatingly sprawling. Quite a feat.

Some of Mitre’s bakes are made by the excellent and vegan Deerly Beloved Bakery and the coffee is from Fairtrade/Rainforest Alliance certified Indigo Valley, meaning you can feel virtuous while relaxing in your chosen corner.

Now, when can we move in?!
