The people who make me hungry: my top 15 food Instagrammers

Y

ou know how they say you should never go to the supermarket on an empty stomach? I’d like to modernise that a little: never go on Instagram on an empty stomach, or there’s a risk you’ll have doughnuts for dinner. I envy people who are capable of meal planning and then sticking  to those plans. As a person who is totally at the mercy of whims and fancies, and often just forgets meals, the answer to What did you have for dinner, Hannah? is, on most weekdays, along the lines of Well, I forgot to eat, but I remembered eventually and had fish fingers, followed by jelly, and then some roasted carrots. It’s all kinds of embarrassing, but makes the victory all the more sweet when I pull together what my mother would consider to be a proper meal.

The thing is, though, that fifteen minute walk between the station and home is prime Instagramming time. It’s when the UK is gearing up for dinner, and the US is up and making the most of the daylight, flooding the internet with cakes, pastries, and even artfully-shot vegetables that make you long for greens in a way that no-one could have expected of a generation raised on turkey dinosaurs.

So I’m not saying the following people, Instagrammers who take some of the most drool-worthy food photos around, are to blame…but they’ve taught me everything I know about pancake cravings.

 Off on a tangent

  • Got a favourite food Instagrammer? I’m always on the hunt for more to salivate over – leave a link in the comments!
  • You’ll find me here on IG. Sadly, I use a phone so old and rubbish that total strangers have taken the piss out of it on multiple occasions. It’s not so bad if you squint a bit, though.
  • Recently our oven broke. I’m hoping that by the time I’m back – in theory, this post should go live while I’m off working on a wicked sunburn suntan – it will have miraculously fixed itself. Fingers crossed, or else this blog might have to refocus to be about how to salvage desperately burnt food.
  • And on a finally, more cheerful, note, check out First We Feast. In addition to doing regular Instagram round ups, FWF has some great food and drink writing.
The lady behind The Dinner Bell! I’m that person who doesn’t let you leave their flat without eating something, and will probably press a parcel of cookies or cake into your hands as you head to the door.

I’m a sub-editor by day, avid book-reader by night, and octopus fan always. I live in north London, but little bits of my heart still belong to Norfolk, where I grew up, and Sheffield, where I went to uni and finally lost my bumpkin accent.
