Stoke Mill, Stoke Holy Cross

Technically, sitting 5 miles out of the city centre, Stoke Mill is just about out of the NorEats catchment area – but it’s just too good to leave off any respectable guide to restaurants in Norwich.

It’s one of those places you want to take all your out-of-town friends to. The restaurant offers fine dining served by friendly, attentive staff, but without the pretence or stuffiness that comes with many upmarket establishments.

There’s been a mill on the site for more than 700 years, and the building itself its part of Norfolk’s food history, having served as a flour mill (and a paper mill) before being used in the production of Colman’s mustard in the early 1800s.

These days, the interior is light and spacious, while maintaining cosiness with warm woods and comfortable sofas. The food, of course, is the focal point: dishes are well thought-out, with beautiful presentation and portion sizes that mean you don’t leave hungry but can definitely fit in dessert – and we recommend you do!
